Please add the Footwork

Postby Sky » 25 Apr 2013, 17:27

Footwork is a great part of tennis IRL. Many great players IRL have great footwork, which means they can quickly ajust their step to strike the incoming ball, so they have more time to think and perform a better strike. In this game, footwork is missing. We just have speed attribute, which can't fully conclude the foodwork of tennis. So please
manutoo, focus on footwork, and this game will be deeper and more realistic than ever.

I beg to differ. Footwork is in the game, it is just not represented by a in-game Stat as speed. Footwork in TE is user dependent, it means you, as a user, have to adjust your positioning with adjustment steps to be able to strike the ball on sweet-spot of your racket. Making it as a Stat doesn't make sense. What will that stat do exactly? ...make your player have better footwork? ...how? By automatically hitting better shots when the stat is high? That will make the game more automated and not necessarily deeper or more realistic.

I absolutely agree with djarvik on this!

The footwork is already there in the game ':D i only need to Tap my analogue stick a few times, to get into the right Position to hit the sweet spot! Sometimes i do - Sometimes i don't - That's Tennis... But the footwork is definitely there in this game :D

EDIT:
i have played many tennis games where i drag my analogue stick from left to right for example: The player sprints faster than Usain Bolt...Thats Not realistic...

Sky,
I'm a bit puzzled as well ; would you imagine that Footwork skill to increase/lower the AutoPos speed ?

Sorry, I don't express myself correctly. Yeah, you can use controller to adjust steps, but I think each player in the game should have his own adjust ability, which can differentiate players in footwork. For example, you try to control a player getting into the right position, but his footwork is poor, something you don't expect happen: your player slips down, or he can't get into the right position, or he gets into the right position but his steps is messy, so his strike is very poor.

AutoPos is a automatic function, if a user control his player very well, it is not that important. I think Footwork skill must have more impact on this game.

The only thing I can think of, as Manu mentioned, is that Footwork stat be responsible for Aupopos speed and triggering. Basically the higher the stat the faster it triggers and happens (the Autopos).

But, that is now a function of a Player/User, meaning right now that "variable" is the same for all characters, so it is up to a User to position and react to start positioning himself. What that means, is that if one individual has a better reaction - he will start positioning himself earlier/faster, and if another individual has better eyes and anticipation of landing zone - he can positioning himself better/more precise.

So if anything, Footwork right now has the ultimate impact possible. Adding a stat to it, will just mess with the fact that certain people have better skill at positioning then others.

I can't agree with you. In online games the point in Character Sheet is limited. If a user have better skill at positioning, he has less need to have a lot of Footwork stat. He can decrease his Footwork stat, and increase other important stat, which is also a representation that he has better skill at positioning. And In World Tour, I think it could have a huge impact on CPU Players. Currently all the CPU Players have the same rediculous Footwork, which means players have more consistent strike are much harder to beat. For example, Justin Henin are much harder to beat than Serena Wiliams, which is totally rediculous because they are all great players, can tell who is better.

hmmm I did not think about off-line. So you may have a point there.

About online, what you propose is to further empower the strong. Basically if I am a strong player in positioning, I can use the extra points to make me even stronger by increasing other stats. And if I am a weaker player, I would have to use more points on that stat to help me, and sacrifice in other stats. I play the game for about a year, and I can tell you that movement/foot work is heavily overpowered skill in TE. You need to be able to do these really well to have any sort of chance. Shot making and strategy comes a weak second, a good deal behind in importance. So to me, it means if one cannot position himself well for the shots, he will struggle immensely and no amount of strategy and shot making will help. But once you do get that footwork down, it becomes almost identical to a lot of players and then the strategy and different skill come into play more. If anything, I would like to see less "help" autpos, or anything auto...but that's just me.

Although there is another side to this argument that I understand and agree with. The fact that movement and footwork at times take presidence over strategy and timing and shot making. One could argue that too much attention is devoted to the movement /footwork in the game and not enough to strategy/timing/shot making. For example, a lot of shots in TE are too easy to execute. I would prefer the accel shots to be more random and generate more errors on their own, even if your footwork is perfect, as there is one more aspect missing in TE - Control between depth/power/spin. Freedom of sorts. Even if I line-up the shot, I should be able to time it wrong, over-cook it, or under-cook it etc... hard to explain, hope you understand.

I agree with the OP that footwork should be an adjustable stat in the game. I've been pushing up my net play and ground stroke accuracy stats to make my timing on the run easier, but I really don't know which is most important. It's just a guessing game for me right now. I play with elite controls, no auto-repositioning, all that jazz, so this isn't about user skill.

It just makes no sense that there isn't a specifically adjustable to stat to make hitting running groundstrokes an asset like it is for Nadal or Ferrer rather than a liability like it was for a guy like Roddick. It's a massively important skill in tennis, especially on slower courts, and it deserves its own stat just like the various ballbasher/servebot skills have their own stats. If auto-positioning needs to be adjusted to compensate for this making the game too easy, so be it.

Sky,
in World Tour, CPU players have an hidden skill named "Positioning" that leads to more positioning mistakes when it's low ; it's pretty close of what you described.
