All shot types?

Postby Rob92 » 03 Apr 2013, 03:37

Hi,

Been playing a lot of TE recently, a mixture of the original game and the ITST 1.13 patch and having a lot of fun.
I'd just like to clarify though all of the shot types available in the game and how to perform them.

I know about all of the usual ones like regular, short regular, slice, drop shot, acceleration, short acceleration, top spin, lob and aggressive lob.

However, I also know about two more - the short slice (go to do a drop shot and release "up" late) and the side spin shot (short acceleration then top spin in one preparation) so I'm just wondering:

1) Why are these not stated in the documentation or ingame tutorial?
2) Are there any others?

Thanks.

Never mind - searched this forum and found out about the documentation within the install folder which has info about the "secret strikes".

The question remains though about why these are kept secret? From my experience in TE the side spin shot has no real purpose in improving your play, nor does the other type of lob (b2, b2+down, b2), but the short slice is a commonly used shot in real life and is very effective, against defenders especially - keeps the ball low and short without drawing your opponent completely to the net like a drop shot, just slightly inside the baseline (brings the double bounce into play, esp online) and I think everyone should know of it's existence without research or by accident. Just my thoughts.

Hello,

I added the short slice only at beginning of last year ago, and as it's a combo, I just put it beside the banana shot info, without putting much thoughts.

On another side, I like the idea of "secret" shots, and as the combo shots are more difficult to execute, I guess it's not that bad newcomers don't know about them at 1st, coz they already have plenty to learn...

I understand :).

Some of the people online are insanely good at this game, I get my ass whooped by most people over 1500 ELO - I don't know how they do it! All I can do is practice but my reactions on the serve return and judgement of length (without preview) fail me .

Unfortunately, if your reflexes are a bit under the average, it means they're quite under the top players and like this you have a big handicap against them, even if you're smarter about tennis strategy, as reflexes are the very base to be good at TE.

Yup - I'm not complaining though as it's very much a part of real tennis too.

I think it's more a case of the viewpoint and perspective being different in TE than real life than my reactions though - I used to play table tennis a lot to a fairly high standard (played internationally for my age group in 2005) and played cricket for a club - both sports relying heavily on quick reactions. When your view is perpendicular to your opponent it's easier to tell instantly where it's heading than a TV-like camera angle. I've tried the third person and subjective cameras but I find those difficult to use in the game.

Same for the depth of the shot - without the preview on it's difficult to tell sometimes.

The key is practice though, given enough time I'll probably get used to it :).

Rob92,
except for people with especially good spatial visualization, I don't think practice will ever replace the Danger Zone display ; it may help for the ball impact though.
