Serve n volley way too difficult

Postby nitrami » 31 Mar 2013, 02:10

Tennis Elbow is an incredible game overall. My main suggestion for how to make it even better concerns the difficulty of playing serve and volley. I have tried to perfect this type of play for a long time, but in the end it is just far more difficult to win touch matches with serve and volley than playing a baseline power game.
Will there be a future update that makes it a little easier to employ this type of play? It is a petty that this strategy has almost disappeared from the modern ATP tour, at least it should be alive and well in Tennis Elbow, especially since it is one of the strategy modes.

Thanks!

That's not true, im almost sure i've played more matches than u and its already to hard to pass a guy at the net then it was before..If ur net skills are good and u approach well to the net its easier to win than playing in baseline.. My suggestion is improve ur skills at net then give it a try again ;)

I´m still trying to perfect the serve and volley play. Do you have any good tips to share?

I was very bad at volleying too, I still find it difficult, but I managed to improve a lot.
I don't actually serve and volley, rather I try approaching the net during the point, when my opponent is off-balance. I recently used this tactic against Nadal and I beat him in Wimbledon final. All previous matches against Nadal, my player got very tired. By using the net more regularly I was able to shorten the points and I could restore my energy.

If you want to SERVE and volley, I think you must have a very powerful serve (like Karlovic), or a serve with A LOT of precision and consistency, so your opponent will not be able to attack your serve. If you manage to make them return a slow ball, it is pretty easy to finish the point, assuming you have good volleying skills.

If you want to approach net during the point, I recommend doing that with extreme caution, only when your opponent is off-balance, or if you make a very good slice, because if he has the time to prepare, he will probably use a short angled acceleration shot which will be hard to counter. I noticed it also varies according to the opponent's style. A puncher, for example, will probably try to counterattack even when out of balance, so this could be dangerous. A defender like Nadal sometimes uses angled slices which are hard to reach when you are approaching. Anyway, just approach the net quickly, consciously, and do not glue yourself to the net. Stay a little behind, use a defensive volley first, preferably in his backhand, and then try to finish the point with a more strong volley. Only get very close to the net if you see he is running completely lost without possibility of lobbing you.

Hope it helps! :)

I just can't volley, period. My guy has 100% on all the volley categories, but I just don't know how to do it. I don't know what buttons to push, I guess. My volleys either go out or harmless back to the middle of the court, subsequent to which I am easily passed or lobbed. I just cannot hit good angular volleys and I have no clue how to drop volley.

So Federer is in another Wimbledon final. Maybe Manutoo should consider making it easier becoz it would refelct what's going on in real tennis :p

aarondmsu,
luckily for you, there's an easy way to fix that : turn on the aiming preview, play in warmup mode, go to the net, and do plenty of volleys till you get the hang on it.

Trick with s/v is precision on the serve, not power. Hit a b1 serve (quite powerful, consistent and much more precise) rather than a b1+2 serve where you'll lose consistency and precision. Vary the spin you use and AIM FOR THE LINES!!!! If you hit it into his hitting zone he'll just be able to tee off on you. Also if you hit a b1+b2 serve you're more likely to hit into his hitting zone, where a lot of players will use the serve pace to hit an even harder return, plus you won't have as much time to get to the net. You'll probably be able to hit a b1 serve again as a second serve.

Remember s/v is about hitting serves that give you has much time to get into a good net position as possible, not constantly hitting incapacitating serves and putting away feeble returns. Anyone with a big serve can do that, hell did you see Karlovic at Wimbledon? Good s/v players are phenomenal once they get to the net, they can live with a good return.

Start your approach as soon as you hit the serve, and anticipate where the returner is going to hit the ball. If you served out wide cover the return up the line. Down the middle move slightly more into the middle of the court. If it turns out the serve was into his hitting zone you need to start guessing, because he'll try to pass you. He has two options, up the line or cross court. I'd generally move to cover the line, because passes in that direction are harder to return.

Playing against s/v players is actually far to easy. They constantly serve into your hitting zone so you can just smack the returns, not giving them enough time to get to the net, and then try to pass them. I play pro-10, elite, no previews, average auto move and s/v players rarely win more than 50% of points at net, even if they're technically better than me. It's a shame, because this is the only area where the TE AI really falls down.

Net play in TE is severely lacking - many shots simply don't exist... Drive volleys from deep in the court, proper half-volley pick ups, half-volley drop shot/angled shots (look how many of these Brown did against Nadal at Wimbledon).

Also, any sort of drop volley when reaching or "jumping" for the ball slightly, even with high net attributes and volleyer style results in many wild unrealistic errors that go into the bottom of the net or almost into the crowd.

Practice makes perfect. Your approach shot is the first important point to reach the net. Try to slice deep into opponent's weaker side. I suggest you switch to Counter playing style. It takes the ball early and has really big jump at the net. The net play in the game is great to me, but some shots I think they need to be added in the future edition like half-volley, etc.

not diffcult,

I think only volleyer way play can beat the Incredible LEVEL.

BASE LINE PLAY max CAN BEAT THE MASTER LEVEL.

Guys..any tips on how to play against Serve and Volleyers? I can hold my own against the likes of Federer and Djokovic. But I struggle greatly against players who rush to the net on every single point.

Aggressive volleys don't seem to work.
