CPU Play Style and Realism

Postby noys390 » 05 Dec 2018, 20:04

Hi Manutoo,
I am new to the TEM2 as I have purchased the license recently. Here I want to put an observation which I have also seen in TE2013. I was watching some 'Human controlled CPU' vs 'AI CPU' matches, where I clearly found on AI CPU many of the styles (especially Puncher, Counter, counterPuncher, allRounder) are preferring to get to the net way too often. This is an undesirable thing considering modern singles Tennis is a very much a game played from the baseline almost 90% of the time. Players try to end there points from baseline, even from an advantageous position or while returning a shot ball, its usually smacked from baseline. I can understand that there are many players we have got from 1980s/1990s where this kind of net rush may suite fine and some people may prefer it that way. So I am suggesting if you can keep only a couple of styles (volleyer, varied) catering to that and rest reflect modern tennis. I have already made a detailed post on this on another topic some days back, so I am not repeating myself again here, on how the different styles should behave. Please take a look if you get time.

I want to thank you for the hard work you are putting in for TE4 and TEM2. Hope we have a great game ahead.

Hello,

I had seen your post in the TE4 Suggestion thread, but at this point I can't really do anything from TE2013 experience reports as CPU already changed too much in TEM2.

So as you have now played TEM2, we can now look a bit more what's going on about that... :)

Puncher & Counter are supposed to like the net.

However, the Counter Puncher should be very close to the Power Baseliner and thus shouldn't go too much to the net.

The All-Rounder should enjoy the net as well, but a bit less than the puncher.

The real issue would be that in modern tennis I guess there are not many Punchers anymore, while there are still plenty in TEM2 base ; I won't change that because I favor the variety of gameplay over 100% realism... :blackeye:
And the Counter net tendency may need to be lowered a bit.

So since TE2013, things changed a lot, at least on clay, as explained here : viewtopic.php?p=254616#p254616 . (TL/DR => in TEM2, the Power Baseliner goes to the net about 4 times less on clay than in TE2013 and the Defender about 2 times less, due to the better physics rules and not from a manual tuning from my part, and the resulting rates are pretty close of real life)

But I didn't test much on other surfaces so it may work less well. As the grass & indoor synthetic are faster than in real life, it's expected to see a bit more volleying on these surfaces than in real life.

One shortcoming may be with weak players : as they play shorter than top players, their opponents get more occasions to rush the net successfully. So it may require some specific tuning.

If you notice matches leading noticeably to too many net points, you can give me the match stats here and then send your saved game so I'll check in details what's going on (HowTo => topic19-4589.php ). It means you should manually save before each match.

It was about the current match against the All-court attacker, right ?
I think overall it was almost alright, except he started to rush the net a bit too much from the baseline, so I tuned down a bit his net rush rate. I also tuned down a bit the ones from the Puncher, All-rounder and Counter styles.

At higher rankings, when the rally speed will be faster and the balls deeper, he won't rush the net that often, though.

Thanks Manutoo for considering the change. Hope this will reduce the net rush from within the rally as well as the frequent tendency to serve & volley.
