in that case it means it's something else.
1st thing is to check your PC doesn't trigger the energy economy mode.

polakis,
if your player is doing small backsteps, it means you can already smash the ball and shouldn't go back anymore (or just a bit).
If your player can't smash the ball coz it's too high, he'll turn around & run right away.
