You're going to lose a bunch of ELO !

Postby manutoo » 19 May 2015, 10:40

Hello,

I'm watching closely the ELO system, and the average ELO score of active players is raising all the time. This is because new players come, lose ELO points to current players, then give up and never come back.

As the goal of the ELO is to help you find people of your level, and not to get the biggest score possible, in the next few days I'm going to lower the ELO score of all players who have more than 1000 points, according to this scale :
  • -15% if you have 1500 ELO
  • -21% if you have 2000 ELO
  • -26% if you have 2500 ELO
  • -30% if you have 3000 ELO
  • -33% if you have 3500 ELO
exact formula : NewELO = OldELO * (1 - sqrt(OldELO - 1000) * 0.0067)

This should put back the system near balance (but the inflation will always come back).

Note: this will not change the order of players ; ie: if your ELO is bigger than someone, once the correction is applied, your ELO will still be bigger than him. :wink:

There is a mistake in there: NewELO can be negative. :p

Try: NewELO = OldELO * (1 - sqrt(ELO - 1000)) * 0.67

Define ELO in that context.....I mean within this sqrt("ELO" - 1000)
Is it Old ELO or New ELO or ELO gained/lost or is it ELO=1000?.....Manutoo didn't define it properly and you guys are already running with calculations :annoyed: :sad3:

Ooops, correct formula is, of course :
NewELO = OldELO * (1 - sqrt(OldELO - 1000) * 0.0067)
And yup, if someone has more than 24'000 ELO, he's going to have a bad surprise... :P (ie: negative ELO)
And above 10'000 the curve actually goes down...
But don't worry, no one has more than 4000ish ELO. ;)

Manutoo you need to apply a formula for elo gained/lost too.... ELO is again going to be the same within few days.Whats the point in reducing overall ELO if the gain/loss is same. Once again people will play noobs and raise their ELO to what they want :read2:

....lower the ELO score of all players who have more than 1000 points...
-15% if you have 1500 ELO

I am a little confused. Above statement should read 1000-1500 ELO - 15% ? ...or 1500-2000 ELO - 15%?

I lost about 150 ELO so I am guessing its the former.

Why not start the noobs at 400 ELO? Instead of 1000.

Why am I a junior if my new elo is over 1300? (1361)
Guessed the levels wouldn't change.

E=mc2,
at the current rhythm, it'll take more than 2 years to reach the level of inflation we were before I corrected all the ELO scores.

djarvik,
it's -15% at 1500 ELO. It's less under that and more above that, as the used formula is progressive.

The ELO inflation makes people with big ELO not want to play with lower ELO people. Making new players start with 400 ELO would mean they'd have a very hard time to find opponent. Plus it would be against the basic concept of ELO : it's a closed system where no point is lost nor earn, where everybody starts with the same score, which means someone with 50 games can get approximately the same ELO of someone with 5000 games, if their skills are same.

Algo
level limits never change, so changing the ELO can change your level.
EDIT: I checked and actually 1300+ should be Pro Level, but it's correctly initialized only when you create an online game (so it works for your opponent's level). I'll fix that for next update.
