Either you can set transparency directly in the image, editing on Photoshop (when you save as 32-bit TGA file, it preserves the alpha channel), or you can change the alpha component of the font color used in the image.
For example:
You can define a font like this
Font Bg HugeChars 15 20 0xDFFFFFFF
The first pair of values (DF) represents transparency, so change it to increase or reduce transparency. Then, when you put your image in the scoreboard, using the "item" command, use this font.
