Lowering Serve Speed of Women in World Tour ?

Postby manutoo » 20 Sep 2011, 03:41

Hello,

I got an email from an user that outlined the fact that best female players can serve at an average of 200km/h at Pro-10 level (max speed = 212km/h), while in real life, the best average is closer of 175km/h.
So I'm thinking about lowering it to ~185km/h (max speed = 196km/h).
But I wonder if it would lower too much the chances to ace.
I did a quick try with the current settings, and 100% Serve Power vs 100% Speed (in Women WT) seemed a bit too easy to do aces, so maybe the result with lower max speed wouldn't be too bad...

Anyone has any opinion about this..? :)

I totally agree with you. Additionally you could make it possible for one to indicate the gender of his player when hosting a match so that two people of the same gender plays or if a guy is playing a girl he can lower his serve and groundstroke speed ( which i also think should be lowered for realism).

Yes, definitely reduce the speed of the serves. Although with the top speed, this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmjZdqcEd0c&feature=player_embedded (210km/h)

is apparently the fastest ever serve and several women (V Williams, Schultz-McCarthy, Lisicki, Grönefeld) have hit serves over 200km/h. So maybe 200-205 km/h for the max?

torto14,
I think the max being under the real record is not much an issue ; for men, in-game max speed = 231km/h while the record is 256km/h (if I recall well).
What's important is that the max speed should correspond to the everyday real life max speed of the best servers on Tour.

nadalino,
I won't change Training Club/Online rules.

Don't want to sound sexist but in general the women are quite weak serves, it doesnt really matter if you're serving or returning anyone can win the game lol. Of course there are exceptions like Serena, Venus, Stosur who all have fantastic serves(especially Serena). I don't think presenting a glorified image is a bad thing. LOL

The return of serve is getting out of hand with this patch. If the serve got nerfed, the return should scale back some too.

It may be realistic, but it definitely isnt as fun to play anymore, and the second serve w/100% power is almost comical

V,
http://www.usopen.org/en_US/scores/stat ... 701ms.html
=> Average 2nd serve speed 134km/h for Williams, & 122kmh/h for Stosur.
In TE, with 100% Power, avr 2nd speed = 145km/h without spin, and 125km/h with biggest spin.

Anyway, if you don't like it, you can change it, look here : topic15-5074.php#p79465

I'm not so much wanting speed, just more consistant power.
Hitting a 193km/h serve then hitting the "same" serve again at 168km/h is only slightly frustrating, but at this point i'm over it.
I do apprecate that you did give the option of changing the limit, however it's too much of an on/off switch ranging from 41km/h to 233km/h

Hi, I have a question about the default coefficient (0,85): does it correspond to the "old" serve speed, or the one just before the very last update? With 0,85, I didn't notice any change in comparison to what I was used to.

Brecht,
0.85 is the coefficient for the new serve speed. I changed the way it works compared to older version, so actually, it mainly lowered the speed of the fastest woman serves ; less good server didn't see their speed going down much. But now, if you lower 0.85 by 10% then it'll reduce the speed of all servers by 10% whatever they're strong or weak.

Is it possible to increase the ingame max. serve speed to 255 km/h for example? The max. serve speed is only 234 km/h but in real life, Karlovic and Roddick can serve faster...
