TE2009 is too hard, TE2006 was better

General discussions about the 3rd edition of Tennis Elbow

TE2009 is too hard, TE2006 was better

Postby oohzuzana » 11 Dec 2008, 15:39

It needs to be MUCH harder to hit an error in online mode. In simulation mode (which for some reason is what we're using in tournaments ), being off by a milimeter results in an error even on a soft shot aimed at the middle of the court when standing in the green zone. It's no fun for anybody when foot positioning is the reason for most all the errors. If I wanted a game completely about footwork, I'd take up Dance Dance Revolution :P.

My suggestion? Make the green zones bigger. MUCH bigger. And get rid of almost any error where the little explanation shows up with a green background.

I disagree with oohzuzana. The arcade mode is more for what you want, I think. Footwork is important, and it can be used to your advantage. There are times when you can hit a very flat ball by stepping in and to the side and using the correct strike to just clear the net. Sometimes, hitting with part of the racket handle works. I like having control over how I strike the ball by moving to a certain position. Running drop shots are hard for me, and volleying is, also. I am not really having much trouble, though, stepping into the ball, getting into good position, and hitting a powerful shot. Having it realistic this way also helps me to play real tennis better. Also, another possible way this can be used to one's advantage is against two-handed backhand players. Knowing that they must step in very close to the ball to return it with a backhand strike, the shot can be aimed out enough from that side so that it is difficult for them to reach it.

The visual aid is not absolute. You can wait for the ball to drop very low and still hit a good shot, and there are times when you may want to do this. So, you don't always have to be in the rectangle, green zone, or whatever to return the ball well.

I too disagree with Zuzana. I very rarely hit errors anymore, and those I hit are usually too much aiming or my opponent played well to wrong foot me. So I don't find it too hard, it's just fine. Also you can use the normal shot instead of acceleration in difficult situations, positioning doesn't really matter with normal shots.

May I be the 3rd to disagree with Zuzana. It's all about practice. Everything else I wanted to say has already been said.

I get this in principle, but I really don't think it should be all about practice. There is such a huge learning curve with 09 that wasn't present with 06, and it makes it incredibly frustrating for beginners.

And even some non-beginners, like myself. I won my first round in the tournament, but not without hitting 24 errors in one set. Just way too much.

Guest...Sorry to hear that you're about to give up on this wonderful game  I, for one, also felt at one time that it was extremely frustrating to learn and whined much to Manu about it. 8-) Insomuch as he is constantly trying to better the game and meet all of our lofty (and sometimes whiny standards) if you will only have some patience and stick with it I think you can find a lot of enjoyment. In the early development stages of TE09 as well as even now, players such as Brad1981, S.williamz, Kyuuji,Tom Paulman and others have felt some level of frustration at one time or another and have communicated our concerns to Manutoo, who is extremely tolerant and exceedingly patient in trying to improve the gameplay. Some times we disagree with each other's ideas, but I, for one, enjoy the reparte we have in this forum. Hopefully, it's all in good spirit and no one takes it personally  Manu has even expressed thanks for some of our suggestions and implemented as many of them as he deems possible in improving the game, especially within his budget  Real tennis, with all of it's nuances, is also an extremely challenging sport to play well, let alone master. :) As in life, it's frequently not so much about where you end up, but more about the journey to get there, with all of it's twists and turns and challenges. I, as well as most of the others that I previously mentioned, have also played TE06 and I think we mutually agree that although there are more challenges to master, TE09 is vastly incomparable to TE06 in it's variety of stroke production and tactics. I know I have spent way more than a few hours trying to improve my playing in TE09 and although my time is also valuable, I find it tremendously addicting, so hang in there because for the little it costs, it is money well spent!! :D

Yes but some of us are not here to play real tennis....have the highest ELO...beat evrybody.....or win some internet tournament....we are here just to relax, unwind, and have fun. I purchased this game in 2004, and after my old computer died.....the first thing I purchased was another Tennis Elbow game....I thought it was a blast.......I may check back in about 6 months or so .........until then.........this version just isnt for me.

Guest, try this, this will make the game easier: open the Tennis.ini file, which is in your Tennis Elbow directory. Look for the line "SweetSpotScale". Change this from 0.05 to 0.
This makes the game easier for beginning players to get used to the style. It makes the gameplay a little similar to Tennis Elbow 2006.
I use this setting if I just want to rally for fun in training mode, or just play a quick set or so.

Guest, you should play in Arcade mode, you'll see the gameplay becomes almost as easy as the TE2006's one with it...

i liked it more in 06 that you didnt make silly errors like in 09, but i think in general 09 is just a better game :D

Well.......for an agressive player like myself......there is just NO room for error with 2009. Im finding most players I played seemed content with defending......waiting for me to make an error........they seem to want to hit one loopy forehand.......or one lob after another. Brad......thanks for the tip........but it makes me wonder now who knows how to manipulate this game for their own good.......while others are struggling.

guest: keep practising, i'm a full agressive player too and, i don't know if i haven't get to play with someone who plays as you said, but it's not like "there is no room for agressive players". I'm not "struggling while the others knows how to manipulate the game for their own good", you got to know that there is a moment for every shot, using them smartly you shouldn't have much problems playing with any kind of players, at first you'd still losing matches and everything, but there is a moment that you'd start feeling comfortable with your style in the game and you'll start to win some matches(i'm gonna shut up, i'm talking like i'm too good and i'm not  )
