Should shifting service position before serving be banned?

Postby MarkChan » 12 Aug 2015, 04:17

I recognize that some players are doing this these days and they literally shift service pos before serve every pt

I dont think this is realistic becoz u can't "slide" to change service pos in real life.
Also, it is gamesmanship to throw opponent off (returners dunno where to position themselves to return serve because the default pos was supposed to be the correct pos if their opponent doesn't shift his pos.)

IMO, they should be banned...unless it is done on the 1st pt of the game. What do u think?

I think the opposite is/might be more problematic/less realistic (if it's happening) i.e moving around to return.

Moving around to return is excessively used here but it is not impossible in real tennis.
You need that to outguess ur opponent sometimes when they keep serving to one direction.

that's not what I meant by that. I mean guys moving way away from default position even if staying still when they find the place they want to return from, or moving all over the baseline at all times while they wait to return, as if they are playing wheelchair tennis.
What the video shows can only be reproduced here by standing still and at the moment your opponents throws the ball up, moving forward. No problem with that.

Changing your positioninng to serve is not "impossible" in real tennis either, just not done purposefully, because changing customs is hard.

I didn't even vote.
I don't care about this, it's not worth voting for or against
You are obsessing over irrelevant small details, yeah it can be annoying but it doesn't change anything if you are better than your opponent.
