Court Surfaces

Postby Norberto » 22 Jan 2006, 14:33

Hello

According to my research (tennis web pages, ATP players opinions..), if court surfaces were classified in order to bounce speed rating from 1 (slowest) to 5 (fastest), we would have:

Surfaces--> Level
Red Clay -------> 1-1.5 (depending on weather and grain)
Indoor clay (played in some challengers)--->1-1,5
Green Clay (played in a couple of WTA tournaments only)-->1,5-2
Ace Rebound, greenset and porous Hard (concret)---> 2,5-3,5
Indoor hard (greenset, often)---> 3-3,5
Acrylic (Decotourf II, plexipave)---> 3,5-4
Other Hard courts (acrylic are usually faster than non-acrylic)--->2,5-4
Indoor capet (taraflex, often)------> 4-4,5
Grass, artificial grass -----------> 4,5-5 (depending on weather)

Main tournaments:

Australia Open (Ace Rebound) ---·> about 3
Roland Garros, Montecarlo, Rome, Hamburg (Red Clay) ---->1-1,5
Miami, Montreal (Concrete)---> about 3 (they are not too fast)
Indian Wells (Plexipave)-----> 3,5-4 (faster than Miami according to some players)
Madrid TMS (Indoor greenset)---> about 3-3,5
US Open, Cicinnati (Decotourf) ---> about 3,5-4 (significantly faster than other hard courts)
Paris TMS (Indoor Taraflex) ----> about 4,5 (it is said it is very fast)
Wimbledon (Grass) ----> 4,5 -5 (the more hot weather, the more slow)

It is just my opinion according to my sources, not accurate values anyway...

I hope to be useful.

Regards,
Norberto

Indoor hard is almost always faster than outdoor hard. This is because outdoor hard courts are usually mixed with some sort of clay or silt so to withstand weather better.

Hello!

Yes, indoor hard are often faster than outdoor. Surface and no-wind environment? (I m not sure)...make them different to play.

I have found 2 interesting webs about tournament surfaces and the other about speed rating for each tournament based on statistics:

www.stevegtennis.com
www.tennisinsight.com/tournaments.htm

Having a look them...overall conclusions (1 slowset, 5 fastest) are:

Monte Carlo, Rome (Slowest Clay)---------1
Roland Garros, Hamburg (Clay)------------1.5
Australia Open (Rebound Ace)--------------2-2.5
Indian Wells (Plexipave)---------------------2.5-3
Miami (Laykold)-------------------------------2.5-3
Us Open, Toronto, Cincinnati (Deco turf)---3-3.5
Madrid (Indoor Greenset)--------------------3.5-4
Wimbledon (Grass)---------------------------4-4.5
Paris (Indoor Taraflex)-----------------------4.5-5

According to this research, grass is often slower than Indoor synthetic, and indoor hard is definitly often faster than any outdoor hard.

Hello,

if it didn't change since 2 years ago, about the clay, the speed is more like this :
Hamburg : Slowest Clay
Roland Garros, Monte Carlo : Normal Clay
Rome : Fatest Clay

Rome is the fastest one, that's why Sampras could have won here in 1994 to get his only important title on clay.

Hamburg is the slowest, coz it's very rainy there, and they have to put a heavy clay to absorb water, I guess...

Monte Carlo is the closest clay from RG, and usually we say the one who wins Monte Carlo has the best chances to win RG.

About the other surfaces, I thought the Rebound Ace was more fast than other hard surface, but I watched closely the finals this week-end, and it seems the rebound is pretty high, so I guess it's a slower surface.

Thanks for these researches ! :)
